Weslei Guimarães is a performer, dance teacher, choreographer and native of Rio De Janeiro. He is living in the USA as part of BrasArte’s artist-in-residence program. Weslei teaches a variety of dance styles from Samba no pé, bolero, soltinho (brazilian swing) fórro samba de gafieira and Baile funk across the Bay Area, with a focus on Brazilian partner dances, and to dance enthusiasts of all ages. In Brazil, he is a national Bolero champion, winner of “Estilizando Bolero” in 2016. He has also appeared on the hugely popular Brazilian TV programs Esquenta! and Encontro com Fatima Bernardes, and in Rio’s Carnaval as a dancer in many “comissões de frente” of escolas de samba. Here in the US, Welsei has appeared as a performer in productions like the CubaCaribe Festival, Sambrazil! (performer, choreographer, assistant director), and Yemanja Arts Festival, as well benefit concerts for KPFA and DACA support services. He is also in his second year as choreographer and leader of the first Samba de Gafieira section to be presented at San Francisco Carnaval.
