dancer, choreographer, instructor
Atlanta, GA
Safiyatou Camara (Sophie), is Founder/Executive Director of Wontanara INC. Safi was born and raised in Guinea, West Africa, where she first started her journey with west African drum and dance. Raised in a family where everyone either held a drum or knew how to dance, or both, she was always captivated and surrounded by the beauty of the culture, thus leading to her wanting to push and further continue the legacy her family has left. She first began to dance by the time she could walk and trained under her family to gain knowledge and skill to further push herself. She danced with the famous Merveilles De Guinee Ballet, created by her great uncle Sekou Sano, at the age of 13, and trained with the group for months as well as performed on stage with them- being one of the youngest members in the group. There she learned under Master Instructor, Yamoussa Soumah, Rokia Sano, Sekou Sano [current Director General of Les Merveilles], & Mamady Sano! She grew within herself as an artist.
