Kathak is a classical Indian dance originating from northern India which obtained influences in style and tradition through the Mughal Courts, Persian dance, and the Hindu temples. The word Kathak is derived from the sanscrit word for "story", and the dancers themselves are many times considered storytellers. The dance form showcases the dancer's technical skills in footwork, pirouttes, and abhinaya, or the art of expression. As in other classical Indian dances, Kathak dancers wear ghungroos , which are small metallic bells strung along their feet, which accentuates the rhythmic aspects of the dance and allows the audience to hear the complex footwork. Cal Kathak tries to highlight some of the traditional aspects of Kathak while using more modern music.
